Patented Anti-Barricade Door Sets

90% of inpatient suicides tragically occur in either the patient's bedroom or bathroom, and 49% use the door hardware. Selecting the right doors that work for patients and staff is crucial. We’ve worked to design and implement the safest and fastest anti-barricade access in Mental Health Facilities.

Our anti-barricade door is specialised for mental health facilities to prevent patients from barricading themselves in a room, which we all know is dangerous for both the patient and staff. These doors are an essential safety measure designed to be tamper-proof and resistant to patient damage.

Safehinge Primera fits anti-barricade doors with mechanical locksets so ward staff can quickly release an extra pull force handle to override the lock and provide an additional pull advantage. With electronic locksets, staff can always access the room from outside in an emergency in seconds, while patients inside cannot lock or barricade themselves.

These doors can also be equipped with observation panels and a weighted full-door ligature alarm allowing staff to safely monitor the patient's behaviour from outside the room, designed to make monitoring a ward more efficient for nurses while improving service users' dignity and recovery.

Safehinge Primera Anti-barricade Doors in Mental Health Facilities

Safehinge Primera's complete anti-barricade door set (Swiftstop) includes patented unique components to enhance patient safety and staff security. We’ve outlined these below, but please get in touch with us today if you have any questions about our anti-barricade or anti-ligature solutions.

Benefits for your Mental Health facility:

Collapsable anti-barricade door stop

Collapsable anti-barricade door stop

Our collapsable anti-barricade door stop ensures the fastest and safest access for mental health facility staff in barricade situations. Our door stops reliably provide access to a room within 5 seconds of an emergency, even with internal pressure on a door.

Facilities widely use these as a compliant replacement for ‘push button stops’ (which should have been replaced before February 2018, per NHS guidance). There is a single activation point using a staff-only lifeline key.

Full-door Ligature Alarm

Fitted to our anti-barricade doors, this is the world's first and only full-door ligature alarm. Turning the entire door into a weighing scale, our anti-barricade door sets with wireless full-door alarms detect vertical loads of over 5kg.

You told us that door-top alarms only address one high-risk ligature point, and patients will be able to identify the next ligature point on the door. Our full-door detection aids safety alerts. With an invisible built-in sensor, our full-door ligature alarm detects vertical loads of over 5kg applied to any door part

Clinicians also told us that 100% of ligature attempts are made on closed doors. We always aim to solve today's and tomorrow’s problems within mental health facilities, so our full-door alarm detects ligatures when the door is open and closed.

Clinical staff are busy and thinly spread, so our alarm immediately sends an alert to the nearest nursing station when a patient has a ligature attempt - helping to fill in blind spots between observations.

Mechanic and Electronic Locking

The Mechanical Anti-barricade Lock
on this anti-barricade door is operated manually by a key. These locks are reliable and cost-effective and do not require electricity or batteries. The lock is located on the outside of the door, allowing staff to secure the door from the outside in an emergency.

The Electronic locking System uses electricity to secure the door. This type of locking system uses key cards, fobs or wristbands as an electronic means to control access to the room. This system provides patients with the independence to lock and unlock their own private space whilst also allowing staff to control and monitor access to the room quickly.

In an emergency, the integrated override electronic lockset allows staff to gain entry into the room in just 5 seconds without the need for a toolkit.

The combination of mechanical and electronic locking covers the most common, to more determined, barricade situations - from overriding locks to wedged doors.

Patented Finger Guard Technology:

Our highly robust door finger guards can be fitted to an anti-barricade door. Made of solid aluminium, these cover the gap in the door hinge, offering superior safety and robust protection. Designed to protect patients' fingers from getting trapped in the anti-barricade door hinge, reducing the risk of injury, they can withstand tough knocks, helping to protect the door edge.

Concealed Door Closer (Sureclose)

A concealed door closer is installed inside the door frame rather than on the door's surface so they are hidden from view and provide a more secure and tamper-proof solution.

Constructed from durable materials that are resistant to patient damage, a concealed door closer works by controlling the speed and force of the door as it closes. When a patient opens the door, the closer is compressed; when they release it, the closer slowly and smoothly pulls the door closed.

Our Anti-Ligature concealed door closer called Sureclose is a reliable anti-ligature overhead hidden door closer that’s robust, simple to fit and secure. Available in three configurations to suit different environments, the concealed transom design is fitted in the frame head, successfully avoiding ligature points and looking discrete.

Integrated Vision Panels:

Our doors include observation panels that allow staff to monitor patients inside the room without compromising patient privacy or dignity whilst in recovery.

Anti-ligature Design

Our engineering team have designed the doors to minimise the risk of patients using the door or its components to harm themselves with ligature risks, reducing the hazard of self-harm incidents.

Robustness & Testing

Door Robustness Guarantee

5-Year Robustness Guarantee

We guarantee that our door will remain robust enough not to break, even under sustained service-user damage attempts, for at least five years. In the unlikely event of a door breaking beyond repair, no matter the cause, we guarantee to replace the door and make that bedroom operational within seven days.

Safehinge Primera anti-barricade mental health doorsets enhance patient safety and staff security in mental health facilities. These features can help reduce the risk of self-harm and destruction while ensuring staff can access the room quickly in an emergency.

Evidence of Door Robustness

Evidence of Door Robustness

Customers told us that, from experience, they expected to replace their anti-barricade door system every 2-3 years - depending on the patient-user group.

Not only are replacement doors on a live ward costly, but installing them is extremely disruptive to patient recovery and ward operations.

We're committed to protecting your patients and your investment, and our rigorous testing has ensured that you considerably reduce the need for replacement doors.

The importance of testing Anti-Barricade Doors

At Safehinge Primera, we follow rigorous methods in our testing and repeat these to ensure you have an extremely robust door that will intercept barricade attempts.

Our products undergo twelve mechanical and abuse assessments and fire and acoustic checks - this is above and beyond industry guidance, which is three checks.
