Safehinge Primera have picked up another award after the Symphony en-suite door won Product Innovation of the Year at the Design in Mental Health Awards 2017.

Impressed judges praised our “revolutionary lifesaving solution”, which has no known ligature points and retrofits to an existing doorframe in just 60 minutes.

We redesigned the en-suite door from a blank canvas after working closely with architects, clinicians and facilities managers from NHS and private providers.  Its unique design also allows the leaves to be personalised, offering service users choice and creating homely spaces.

The judges added: “This is a totally new and innovative product which offers a solution to the en-suite door for which we have been searching for some time.

“It offers the occupant privacy and dignity, is attractive and brings a new dimension to the bedroom.  It's revolutionary, lifesaving and anti-ligature – and different from any other solution to a difficult design problem.”

A successful appearance

The award was the high point of yet another successful appearance by Safehinge Primera at the Design in Mental Health Network (DIMHN) exhibition

Held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham on 16-17 May, it allowed us to showcase the range of safe, practical and aesthetically appealing Mental Health doorsets created by the recent union of Safehinge and Primera.

Safehinge director Philip Ross said: “We’re delighted to have won the Product Innovation of the Year Award for our new en-suite door.  Like everything we do, it’s designed with recovery in mind and is the result of close collaboration with clinicians, architects and service users.  It also continues our proven track record of setting best practice.”

Philip added: “The DIMHN exhibition is the definitive event for the built environment in mental healthcare  – and we believe our en-suite door is the definitive solution to a long-standing problem.

“We’ll continue to listen closely to our customers and find more innovative answers to the many complex issues facing today’s Mental Health environments.”

Perfect alignment

Our doorsets’ balance of safety and design mirrored the key themes of the conference, and were also closely aligned with the findings of its ‘Design With People in Mind’ research paper.

These include the recovery benefits of creating homely spaces, bringing people together, reducing unwanted noise, and offering choice and personalisation of service user space – all of which are at the heart of our Symphony doorsets.

The annual DIMHN exhibition brings together a unique audience of NHS and private healthcare professionals, contractors, architects and clinicians, all focused on creating therapeutic environments in Mental Health facilities.  The 2017 Conference featured over 30 speakers, with a wide range of specialist content.
