Safehinge meet HRH Prince Charles
The directors of Safehinge Ltd were privileged to meet with HRH Prince Charles last week at a PSYBT business seminar in Glasgow. The directors discussed the problem of children trapping their fingers in door hinges and explained the origins of the project as The Royal Sick Children's Hospital in Glasgow, where 2% of admissions are from injuries caused by doors. Generalising this to the whole of the UK, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents estimate that 30,000 children are injured by doors every year.
HRH Prince Charles seemed surprised by the statistics, describing them as "shocking". In his role as Design Champion for the NHS, Prince Charles aims to promote the role of good design and whole life cost considerations in new buildings. His Royal Highness kindly suggested some organisations he works with who may be interested in raising awareness of the injuries caused by doors and possible solutions.
